Intro

Thermal paper is one of the most important and widely used materials in the world today, widely used in industries such as retail, banking, medical, and transportation. This type of paper has gained popularity due to its ability to print without the need for ink or toner, and is known as one of the economical and efficient solutions in instant printing. In this article, we will examine the history, production process, types, applications, and advantages and challenges of thermal paper.

History of thermal paper

The history of thermal paper dates back to the 1960s. This type of paper was first introduced by the 3M company in the United States. This early technology was based on a special combination of chemicals that changed color using heat. Over time and with the advancement of technology, this type of paper improved rapidly and became one of the main products in the printing and packaging industry in the 1970s and 1980s.

  • 1960s: Initial introduction of thermal paper by 3M.
  • 1970s: Expansion of applications in various industrial sectors.
  • 1980s: Improving quality and reducing production costs.
  • 1990s: Rapid growth in global markets and increased product diversity.

This technology was widely used in receipt printers, automated teller machines (ATMs), and ticket printing machines. Today, thermal paper is recognized as a key component in the printing process and production of all types of receipts and labels.

فرآیند تولید کاغذ حرارتی

The process of producing thermal paper involves several steps that ultimately result in the production of paper that is capable of changing color when exposed to heat. This process includes the following steps:

1. Production of base paper

The thermal paper manufacturing process begins with the production of base paper. The base paper is usually made from wood fibers and must have a smooth, even surface so that it can absorb the thermal coating well.

  • Raw materials: wood fibers or recycled materials.
  • Features: Surface uniformity, absence of cracks and weak points.

2. Thermal coating

At this stage, the base paper is coated with a heat-sensitive layer. This layer consists of three main parts:

  • Liposomes (Leuco Dyes): These materials change color when heat is applied. Liposomes are normally colorless and turn a specific color (usually black) as the temperature increases.
  • Developers: These substances help the liposomes to show their color. Developers are usually special acids that facilitate the chemical reaction that causes the color change.
  • Stabilizers: These substances are used to preserve and increase the durability of printing on paper and its resistance to environmental factors such as light and moisture.

3. Topcoat Layer

In the final step, a protective layer is added to the paper. This layer acts as a protective shield and prevents scratches, contamination, and environmental damage to the thermal layer.

  • Purpose: To protect the thermal layer from environmental factors.
  • Benefits: Increased durability and useful life of thermal paper.

Types of thermal paper

Thermal paper is produced in different types, each designed for specific applications. Below we will introduce the different types of thermal paper:

1. Standard Thermal Paper

This type of paper is used for general applications such as printing sales receipts, tickets, and bank slips. The characteristics of this paper include:

  • Average print quality: suitable for everyday use.
  • Low production cost: economical and cost-effective.

2. Topcoated Thermal Paper

This type of paper has an additional protective layer that is more resistant to environmental factors such as moisture, oil, and scratches.

  • Advantages: Greater durability and better resistance to environmental damage.
  • Applications: Suitable for printing long-term tickets, barcodes and important receipts.

3. Non-Topcoated Thermal Paper

This type of paper does not have a protective layer and is mostly used in applications that do not require high durability.

  • Features: Lower production cost, suitable for temporary prints.
  • Applications: Single-use tickets, simple receipts, and short-term reports.

4. Two-Color Thermal Paper

This type of paper is capable of printing two different colors and is used for applications that require greater distinction and visual effects.

  • Features: Two-color printing capability to emphasize certain information.
  • Applications: Special tickets, promotional receipts and prints that require distinction.

5. Pressure-Sensitive Thermal Paper

This type of paper is sensitive to pressure in addition to heat and is suitable for applications that require resistance to pressure.

  • Features: High resistance to pressure and heat.
  • Applications: Shipping labels and special barcodes.

Thermal paper applications

Thermal paper is used in many different industries and applications due to its unique properties. Below are some of the main uses of this type of paper:

1. Retail

One of the largest users of thermal paper is the retail industry. In this industry, thermal paper is used to print receipts and invoices on POS devices.

  • Advantages: High print speed, low cost, and requires less maintenance than printers.
  • Applications: Printing sales receipts and payment invoices.

2. Banking

In the banking industry, thermal paper is used to print ATM receipts and cash registers. It is also used to print bank transaction receipts on card reader devices.

  • Advantages: Fast and efficient printing without the need for ink.
  • Applications: Bank receipts and financial transactions.

3. Transportation

In the transportation industry, thermal paper is used to print travel tickets and barcode labels. These applications include train, bus, plane, and subway tickets.

  • Benefits: Reduce printing costs and speed up processes.
  • Applications: Travel tickets and barcode labels.

4. Medical and health

Thermal paper is used in the medical industry to print test results, medical reports, and pharmacy receipts.
